This recipe delivers chewy brown butter chocolate chip cookies with perfect crispy edges, combining a nutty flavor and satisfying texture that’s a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, browned and cooled
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (220 g) packed brown sugar (light preferred)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups (270 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Flaky sea salt (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter, stirring frequently. After 5-7 minutes, it will foam and turn golden brown with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature (about 15 minutes).
  2. Mix sugars and brown butter: In a large bowl, combine granulated sugar and brown sugar. Pour in cooled brown butter and stir or beat until combined and slightly glossy.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla: Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy (2-3 minutes).
  4. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Incorporate dry into wet: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips evenly using a spatula.
  7. Chill the dough (optional but recommended): Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  9. Scoop dough: Drop dough balls about 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Flatten tops slightly for extra crispy edges.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden brown but centers remain slightly soft. Rotate pans halfway through baking if needed.
  11. Cool and finish: Remove from oven, sprinkle with flaky sea salt if using. Let cookies cool on sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

Watch butter carefully when browning to avoid burning. Chill dough to control spreading and deepen flavor. Rotate baking sheets halfway through baking for even cooking. Flaky sea salt enhances flavor when sprinkled after baking.
