This cozy slow cooker spiced apple cider is the perfect warm drink for fall and winter. Made with simple ingredients like apple cider, orange, apple, and whole spices, it fills your home with an incredible aroma and delivers a perfectly balanced, soul-warming sip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 64 ounces (1.9 liters) apple cider (unfiltered preferred)
  • 1 large orange, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1 large apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 34 star anise pods (optional but recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or brown sugar (optional)
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced into thin coins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Wash the orange and apple thoroughly. Slice the orange into thin rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. Do the same with the apple. If using fresh ginger, peel it with a spoon and slice it into thin coins.
  2. Combine everything in the slow cooker: Pour the entire 64 ounces of apple cider into your slow cooker. Add the sliced orange, sliced apple, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise pods, allspice berries, and ginger slices if using. If adding maple syrup or brown sugar, pour that in now.
  3. Give it a gentle stir: Use a long spoon to gently stir everything together, ensuring the spices and fruit slices are distributed throughout the cider.
  4. Set it and forget it: Put the lid on your slow cooker. Set it to LOW for 3-4 hours or HIGH for 1.5-2 hours. The longer it simmers, the more intense the flavor will be.
  5. Check the flavor: After about 2 hours on LOW, lift the lid and taste. Adjust sweetness or spice level as desired (add more cinnamon or maple syrup if needed).
  6. Strain before serving: Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large heatproof bowl or pot. Carefully pour the cider through the strainer to remove fruit slices and spices. Discard solids.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Ladle the warm cider into mugs. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick, a thin apple slice, or a star anise pod if desired. Serve immediately.
  8. Keep it warm: If serving over a few hours, keep the strained cider in the slow cooker on the WARM setting. Remove fruit and spices first to avoid over-infusion.

Notes

For a deeper flavor, toast whole spices in a dry skillet for 30 seconds before adding. To make cleanup easier, tie spices in a cheesecloth bundle. This cider tastes even better the next day—make it ahead and reheat gently. Avoid boiling to prevent bitterness. For a spiked version, add 1-2 ounces of bourbon, dark rum, or brandy to each mug before serving.
