A spooky yet comforting Halloween appetizer featuring a smooth black bean base topped with a decorative white cream cheese spiderweb. This dip is quick to make, requires simple pantry ingredients, and offers a perfect balance of creamy texture and bold spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, rinsed, drained, and patted dry
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 4 oz white cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup shredded white cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 stalks green onion, finely chopped
  • Black sesame seeds or olives (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly, then pat them completely dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  2. Add the dried black beans, softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper to a high-speed blender.
  3. Blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth and silky, scraping down the sides as needed. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the 4 oz of softened white cream cheese with the shredded white cheddar cheese (if using) and a pinch of salt until thick and spreadable.
  5. Spread the black bean mixture evenly onto a dark-colored serving platter, creating a smooth circle about 8-10 inches in diameter.
  6. Transfer the white cream cheese mixture into a piping bag or a Ziploc bag with the corner cut off.
  7. Pipe a small dot in the center of the black bean circle, then pipe straight lines radiating outward like spokes of a wheel (about 8-10 lines).
  8. Using a toothpick, skewer, or the back of a fork, gently drag from the center outward across the radiating lines in a circular motion to create the spiderweb effect.
  9. Garnish with chopped green onions and optional black sesame seeds or olives.
  10. Serve immediately with tortilla chips.

Notes

Ensure the black beans are patted dry to prevent a runny dip. The cream cheese must be fully softened to avoid lumps. The white cream cheese mixture should be thicker than the black bean mixture to maintain contrast. If the web design tears, the white mixture may be too stiff; add a teaspoon of liquid to loosen it. For best results, let the bean mixture chill for 15 minutes before spreading.
