A dramatic, deep black cocktail with smooth vodka, sweet pomegranate, and a subtle fizz. Perfectly balanced and incredibly easy to make, it’s the ultimate spooky sophisticated drink for Halloween.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz (60 ml) Vodka
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Pomegranate Juice
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) Simple Syrup
  • Black Food Coloring Gel
  • Ice Cubes
  • Maraschino Cherry (for garnish)
  • Club Soda or Lemon-Lime Soda (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill your highball or rocks glass with ice cubes and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine vodka, pomegranate juice, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup. Stir gently.
  3. In a small ramekin, add about 1 teaspoon of pomegranate juice. Add a small dab of black food coloring gel (size of a grain of rice) and stir until completely dissolved and the liquid is deep dark gray.
  4. Pour the colored pomegranate mixture into the glass over the ice. Then slowly pour the vodka-pomegranate-lime mixture over the top. Do not stir yet.
  5. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 10-15 seconds until the color is even and the drink is a uniform deep black.
  6. Skewer a maraschino cherry onto a cocktail pick or toothpick and place on top of the ice. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use gel food coloring, not liquid, for a true black color. Pre-dissolve the gel in a small amount of pomegranate juice to avoid clumping. Chill all ingredients beforehand for best results. Adjust sweetness to taste by adding more or less simple syrup.
