Black cat Halloween cookie cake - featured image

A giant, shareable chocolate chip cookie shaped like a cat, decorated simply so anyone can do it. It’s a spooky but not scary Halloween treat with a soft center and slightly crisp edges.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks / 226g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200g) light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups + 2 tablespoons (270g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • Black gel food coloring
  • ¼ cup white candy melts or white chocolate chips
  • Orange candy melts or M&M’s (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 11×7-inch or 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on two sides.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and shiny. Whisk in egg and vanilla extract until glossy.
  3. Sprinkle flour, baking soda, and salt over the wet ingredients. Fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  4. Transfer dough to prepared pan. Press evenly into pan, forming two pointed triangles on the top edge for ears. Dough should be about ½ inch thick.
  5. Bake for 18-22 minutes (11×7 pan) or 15-18 minutes (9×13 pan), until edges are golden and center is soft and slightly puffy. Cool in pan on wire rack for 30 minutes, then lift out and cool completely.
  6. For glaze: Whisk powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons milk. Add black gel food coloring until desired shade is reached. Add more milk if needed for piping consistency.
  7. Transfer black glaze to a piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped. Pipe ears, nose, and mouth on cooled cookie cake.
  8. Melt white candy melts in 20-second bursts in the microwave. Transfer to a bag, snip corner, and pipe two small circles for eyes. Optionally add black pupil dots.
  9. Let glaze set for 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Don’t overbake; the center should look slightly underdone as it continues to bake in the pan. Use a kitchen scale for flour for best results. Chilling the shaped dough for 15-20 minutes before baking helps maintain the cat shape. Cool completely before decorating to prevent glaze from melting.
