A lighter, tangier take on the classic layered dip, featuring Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a creamy, protein-packed appetizer that’s perfect for game days, potlucks, and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (16 oz) refried beans
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt (full-fat or 2%)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup your favorite salsa (drained if watery)
  • 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese (or cheddar/Monterey Jack)
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce (iceberg or romaine, patted dry)
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes (Roma, seeds removed)
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives (drained)
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 1 fresh jalapeño, sliced (optional)
  • Tortilla chips for serving

Instructions

  1. Cook the seasoned meat: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef or turkey and cook, breaking it up, until browned (6-8 minutes). Drain excess fat. Reduce heat to low, add taco seasoning and 1/3 cup water, stir, and simmer 2-3 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and let cool 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the yogurt layer: In a small bowl, mix Greek yogurt, sour cream, garlic powder, and salt until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Spread the refried beans: Spoon refried beans into a 9×13-inch dish and spread into an even layer. If thick, microwave 20-30 seconds first.
  4. Add the seasoned meat: Spoon cooled taco meat over the beans and spread evenly.
  5. Spread the yogurt mixture: Dollop the yogurt mixture over the meat and gently spread into an even layer.
  6. Add the salsa: Spoon salsa over the yogurt layer and spread gently, leaving a border of yogurt visible.
  7. Sprinkle the cheese: Evenly distribute shredded cheese over the salsa.
  8. Layer the toppings: Spread shredded lettuce, then diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, green onions, and cilantro. Arrange jalapeño slices on top.
  9. Chill before serving: Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours) to let layers set.
  10. Serve: Remove from fridge 10 minutes before serving. Serve with tortilla chips.

Notes

For best results, use full-fat Greek yogurt to prevent wateriness. Drain salsa, lettuce, and tomatoes well to avoid a soggy dip. Let meat cool completely before layering. The dip tastes even better after a few hours in the fridge. Can be made vegetarian by omitting meat and adding seasoned black beans or corn.
